They say that 2017 has been the year of the woman.
In literature, theatre, film, politics, and everything in between. Because I’m a supporter of all things that empower women, I want to take a moment to highlight an amazing blogger that I discovered not too long ago.
Her voice, her vibe, and content leave me laughing from my gut (the ugly laugh; you know, the one that makes your voice squeaky or god forbid, you snort), touching my heart, and nodding “Mhm. Preach girl!”.
Disclaimer: I am not getting paid or persuaded to talk about this blog. Come on, I’m a newbie blogger. A nobody. I’m making absolutely no money from this shindig yet. I simply want to highlight some incredible writing and to empower a new friend that I’ve met in this blogiverse. Trust me, by the end of this post, you’ll totally understand why she was worth the shout out!
Why I love this blog
As I mentioned, I’m an aspiring writer and often look for inspiration in big-time bloggers that are kicking ass and taking names. During one of my nights of research and exploring, I came across the Damn, Girl. Get Your Shit Together blog.
Literally — and I mean literally — within the first three sentences, she had me HOOKED. You know the feeling when you get sucked into a good book and you feel like you can nearly paint character’s faces or you feel like you’re having a casual conversation with them, just by the words on the page? Yep. That’s how I felt, my friend.
Her sass, her wit, and her personality spoke directly to my soul. For a moment, I had to take a look away from my computer and ask myself, “Really girl? You didn’t write this just for me did you?!”.
She’s that good y’all. So it’s safe to say that I’ve fallen in love with her personality in her writing style and I’ve scoured her site every day since.
Why you should love it too
By now you’re probably thinking, “So what. Why should I care that you’re utterly obsessed with this woman’s blog?”. Oh, sweetie, I’m so glad that you asked.
First of all, take a second to say the name of the blog. Say it slow. Now say it two more times. It’s basically telling you that girl, get it together…well, that’s exactly what it’s saying. Secondly, the subtitle is “Unsolicited advice for the shit you didn’t know you were doing wrong.” Well hey! Tell me what I’m doing wrong and how the heck can I fix it.
But it’s more than simple “how-to’s” and advice. It’s a looking glass into her personal life (which is so freaking entertaining), and it’s incredibly relatable. At any age, gender, or ethnicity, there is always something that you’ll be able to connect to; even in the teeniest-tiniest way.
In this little shout out, I’d like to highlight 3 of my favorite DGGYST blogs and casually attempt to convince you that they are totally worth your time.
Dehumanizing Your Future Self — Inspired by the concept of self-care and acceptance, it speaks about the fact that one day, you’re not going to suddenly wake up and be an old person. You’re going to be the same old you (pun intended), just aged a few years. You aren’t going to magically transform into a different person. You will be the same you; just 50+ years later.
It means that the things that you enjoy now, you’ll most likely find joy in later. Even from a rocking chair. The things that you dislike, you’ll probably scrunch your wrinkly nose at when you’re older. The takeaway here is to be good to yourself now, so the future you can thank you later.
The Beginner’s Guide to Positive Thinking in Three Difficult Steps — We are all just trying our best. Life is hard, but for the most part, you’re trying to do and be the very best that you can in your current situation. It’s a message that’s not only important to keep in mind, but something that we should be reminding ourselves of every day.
Just like you are trying your best to be the best version of yourself, the people around you probably are too. Now don’t get us wrong, there are terrible people in this world, but to them, that’s their life and to them, they are doing their best. I love how DGGYST articulates this idea, and we can all agree that she does a MUCH better job explaining it, but that’s the reason why you should read the post for yourself!
Fuck Lifetime Movies — This one has all. the. feels. No matter how perfect or imperfect our lives may be, we all have a story. Just like in one of my stories Lessons Learned from Being the Underdog. We don’t always think that our lives are “all that special” because of the superficial garbage that we watch on television and in movies. But in our own way, our stories are pretty damn cool. Because they are our stories.
I know, I know. We eat that shit up though. I’ll be the first to admit that I love the cheesy chick flicks where the bad boy turns good and gets the girl and tales where the awkward kid saves the day. My den is full of DVDs with scripts like that.
But as I mentioned, and my new friend shares on her blog, your life may seem boring, and it probably is. But that’s exactly how it should be! We don’t have the emotional background music to narrate our everyday endeavors. Enjoy your story and don’t be so concerned that it doesn’t look like the latest headline at your local AMC or Redbox.
The Damn, Girl. Get Your Shit Together blog leaves me begging for more and doing a happy dance when a new post is published. I hope that you are able to find some joy in this blog, and if not, that’s okay. That just leaves more reading for me (;
I also hope that I did the blog justice in my summaries and that I was able to capture the essence of her writing in this post. I would love for you to visit her site and show her some maaaaad love!
Have you read the DGGYST blog yet? Well, you totally should. Tell me what you think and if you fall in love like I did, please give her a follow and a virtual hug!
and don’t forget to:
